What We Owe the Future: Helping the Most People by Building the Future of Governance for the Cities of Tomorrow

How do we help the most future, both now and into the far future? What steps can be taken to build a better, more sustainable system of development where people live?

By the end of 2030, 60% of the world’s population will be living in urban areas. The world is projected to add 2.5 billion more urban residents by 2050. Much of this growth will be concentrated in the Global South, but many of these cities and governments struggle to meet the challenges posed by this rapid urbanization, lacking critical infrastructure, jobs, and effective governance for economic development. This leads to continued slum growth and poverty, poor living conditions, and limited job potential for city residents.

Introducing charter cities.

Though they are not new, they are a severely underleveraged tool to improve systems of governance, for the cities of today and tomorrow.

In collaboration with the Charter Cities Institute, this will be the first event in a series of conversations on Effective Altruism and charter cities.

Speakers include:

  • Jeffrey Mason – Researcher, Charter Cities Institute
  • Andre Barbe – Consultant, World Bank
  • Katriel Friedman – Data Scientist Consultant, World Bank
